Mt. Rumney Escapes
About Us
AS LIFE IS A JOURNEY, LET US ACCOMPANY YOU ON IT IN THIS MAGNIFICENT SETTING.
The Mt. Rumney Escapes is a place where you can reconnect with nature and instill a sense of peace and optimism into your life.
Mt. Rumney was named after William Rumney, a poundkeeper and constable who arrived in 1823 and who by 1828 was the grantee of Acton at Clarence Plains. He was also granted land at Baden which area was originally known as Rumney Hut.
Here you will find this course, Mt. Rumney Rd, one of the most imposing panoramic views in Tasmania. From the summit, it is possible to see, in a sweeping view, the greater portion of Hobart, the rich agricultural areas of Richmond, Sorell, and other districts, the coastline scenery of Bruny Island the Channel, Browns River, and other places of scenic beauty.
The colony of Van Dieman’s Land was just 25 years old when the building of Acton commenced in 1829. This historic Georgian homestead was built for William Rumney – a man of means and well-connected – on a site chosen partly because of the splendid views. Those views, over the semi-rural countryside, are still unspoiled today.
The Rumney’s were fellow passengers of George and Hannah Stokell in the “venerable” and their respective properties at Clarence Plains backed onto each other. Knopwood sometimes held a service at Acton Vale, and jotted on the sermon “at Rumney’s” with the date.
Miss Rumney always kept a well-laundered surplice ready for him, and he used to say that when she got married, he would perform the ceremony “for nothing” – a promise duly kept.
This is where you find the gem. The Mt. Rumney Escapes.
